What is Glamour Photography?

This may not be the text book definition, but it's the nomohi-definition:

Glamour is photographic imagery of an erotic or suggestive nature, usually of women.

A bit of history for you..

In the " old days" (I'm talking 1970's - really old) the cliché Glamour photograph was a girl dressed in stockings and suspenders, sitting at a dressing table, shot in soft focus. It was the reserve of top shelf magazines, Sun Page 3 and girlie calendars sponsored by tyre manufacturers.

In the early 1980s the world went bonkers and girlie calendars were frowned on. Sun Page 3 came under heavy fire, and a lady called Mary Whitehouse called for any man showing an interest in naked ladies to be burned at the stake.

Then along came FHM, and other "lads mags". Suddenly it was ok to look at naked or near-naked ladies. Even on the bus. Every TV starlet wanted to appear on the front cover in her undies. Life was good again.

Now, the internet along with the "lad's mags" seem to have created a stronger demand for pictures of gorgeous girls. Which is obviously good news for us, and great news for you!

What's the difference between fashion and glamour?

The difference is huge.

Fashion concentrates on the clothes, more than the girl. The aim is to sell the clothes the girl is wearing; the girl herself is nothing more than a human coat hanger (and usually has a figure as such)! The model usually looks cool, and serene. She's saying, "wear these clothes, and you can look this cool and this serene." As a viewer, you desire the clothes and want to be the model.

Glamour on the other hand concentrates on the girl, rather than the clothes. In fact most times, there are no clothes.
A good glamour model is smiley (like the picture above), sexy, or flirty - or all three. In fact, whereas the fashion model can sometimes seem quite "blank" and cold, the glamour model is anything but blank and cold.
As a viewer you're supposed to forget about the clothes, desire the model, and want her!

It's very important to understand the difference between Glamour and Fashion modelling and decide which type of you're interested in. The techniques are really quite different. Even how you go about getting work is very different.

The fashion industry can be very bitchy. It's over run with agencies, skinny girls, expensive portfolios, minimum heights, maximum age limits, and sharks.

The Glamour industry is a different animal. It's really just a part of the adult entertainment industry. It can be a fun, friendly industry to work in, though it also has its sharks. It can also be very seedy. But there's tons of work, and it's easy to get.

What makes a good Glamour Model

When I started glamour photography I figured it was the prettiest girls that did best - but that turned out to be non-sense.

Then it seemed that girls who had an element of the actress about them, were the winners. Or students. For some reason students seemed to make much better models than any other girl. But then there was the nudity. The more naked the model, the more pictures she sold.

Whilst all those things are true, to a degree, in actual fact my most successful models have something much more simple in common. They can all smile.

Looking back at all the photosets I've shot over the years, without a doubt the ones that sold the most were the ones where the model is smiling at the camera. It might be a cheeky smile, it might be a shy smile, it might be a sexy, smoldering smile, but it's always there.

A smile is like the volume control of a glamour photograph; take a good picture and then introduce a smile, and suddenly you have a great picture. Take a sexy pose and throw in a smile and suddenly it's blisteringly hot. Take an ok looking girl with average size boobs, more than the occasional zit or pimple.. but an amazing smile.. and suddenly you have an absolute babe in front of you.

Nowadays that's what I want from my models more than anything else. A big natural smile. All of my adverts mention the smile, and I spend most of the shoot kidding-around trying to find ways of making my model smile!

So, why not pay us a visit and let's see if I can make you.. smile :-)

How much can I earn as a Glamour Model?

Glamour models are generally paid by the hour, and get paid more per hour depending on how "strong" or explicit the most explicit pose will be.

For instance, a topless shoot, where you probably finish up in just your knickers and your boobs uncovered, might pay perhaps £20 or 25 per hour. HOWEVER, and this is very important, there's hardly any paid topless work out there, if any. Of course, there's always page three. So for about 365 lucky girls a year there's a potential to earn a little more and keep your knickers on.

But hang on - what about clothed glamour? What about the work where you don't have go topless? FHM's High Street Honey's and the like? Swimsuit work. Again, there's very little of this sort of work available. And much of it unpaid. Unless you a) enter a competition to be one of FHM's highstreet honeys or b) you're a tv celebrity or pop star who everyone wants to see naked, but they'll settle for pix of you in your undies.

Next up from topless is "artistic nude", where you are completely naked, we can see a little pubic hair (if you have any) but your legs are closed, or you're turned slightly away from the camera. Now you're earning £30 per hour. Believe it or not, there isn't a lot of nude work either.

After nude things get a little more explicit, and this is where the money is. You can easily earn £40, £50 or £60 an hour. These are the rates we pay, and we usually book models for five hours at a time so we pay out, in cash, £200, £250 or £300 per day.

How difficult is it to become a model?

It isn't.

There is a LOT of work out there, and for any girl who has her head screwed on, is fiercely professional, and is prepared to do at least men's magazine, it's there for the picking.

If you want a little advice on how to market yourself, how to find the work, and how to spot and avoid the scams and pitfalls, feel free to contact me. We're happy to help whenever we can.

Do I have to be over 18? A woman?

To model for us:

You MUST be 18 or over

You MUST be able to bring two valid forms of ID with you to the shoot. One must be a photo ID. Both must bear your signature.
We can't shoot any pictures unless we see this.

You MUST be female. (Being a transvestite isn't close enough I'm afraid.) (Yes people really do ask us that.)

Broadly speaking you'll find this is the same for virtually every genuine glamour photographer in the country.

Yes but, am I the right size, shape, or age?

There is no upper age limit, no minimum height requirement, and no minimum bust size.

You may have heard that you have to be at least 5' 6" tall (or something similar). That's rubbish. That's fashion modelling.

You may have heard that you need to be "young" (ie. turned 18 yesterday, but certainly no older). This too is utter baloney.

And finally you may have got the impression that you must have big boobs. If so I encourage you to buy a copy of the sun for the next week and see just how many of the models have particularly large breasts. You might be surprised at how flat chested the girls actually are.

In short - you can be petite, have little boobs, and you can be in your thirties, forty's or fifties!!

Here at nomohi we have a preference for girls with big smiles, curvy or slim figures, and happy to do men's magazine style modelling after a testshoot. Only occasionally have I ever turned away a lady because of her body shape, and even then it wasn't the only reason.
My top three reasons for not using a model are..

Yes but, I am a larger lady!

We define larger lady as a dress size 16 or over.
If you're smaller than a dress size 14, you are NOT a large lady - click here now to read the rest of the page. This section is NOT for you.

So, larger lady, the good news is being a bigger bundle of fun doesn't preclude you from glamour modelling and yes, we might be interested in photographing you.

However there are a couple of criteria that we wouldn't necessarily impose on a smaller woman that you might want to consider before you contact us.

Firstly we like our larger ladies to have firm, flawless skin. Preferably a little tanned. Yasmin to the left is a perfect example of that. Whilst she's a size 16, she has a firm figure, with lovely sun kissed flawless skin. Perfect.

Secondly, larger ladies are often blessed with a larger bust, and as large breasts will always be popular, the larger your bust, (DD, E, EE, F, FF.. any one with a J?) the more chance you have of making it onto our shortlist. If you wear a dress size 18, but a bra cup size smaller than a C, it's unlikely that we'll want to photograph you.

And it goes without saying that although bust size is important (for larger woman - smaller women can be flat chested), the ability to model completely naked, legs open, is actually more important. We don't have any topless-only or artistic nude work. If you have great breasts but you're a little shy about losing your bikini bottoms, please look elsewhere.

Finally, when choosing a photo to send us, make sure you send us a full length pic of yourself. Preferably naked. Any head and shoulders shots, or pics of you in large coats, or long flowing dresses, will probably be discarded. If your large, you to be large and proud of it to model for us.

Who's behind nomohi?

That would be me. Peter the photographer. That's me to the right.

I started nomohi almost ten years ago, and I'm still doing it, along with my assistant Karen.

Like a lot of photographers, it started as a hobby and an interest in photographing attractive girls.

I originally had a website to display my "work" and attract would-be models, but after a while the website was receiving so much traffic, both from other photographers wanting to "book" the girls, and girls themselves wanting to know more about become a model, that I began to wonder whether or not this could become a "profession". And now of course, it is.

Other than that I'm forty (eek!), and live near the sea, with my cat.. and if you want to know more than that click the picture (takes you to a completely different website).

What does nomohi mean?

nomohi is made up of the first two letters of each word from the phrase "no more hiding". We pronounce it - NO,M'HI

Why "no more hiding"? Before nomohi I had a pretty normal 9-5 job, doing something that didn't really interest me any more. I worked in a bank. Like most people I just figured that that's what work is about - not really enjoying yourself. But when I finally made the decision to turn my hobby into my life I felt a huge sense of relief. Like I was finally doing something genuine, something that I enjoyed. It was as if the real me had been hiding, all those years, behind his desk, at the bank.

Pretty heavy stuff for a man that produces some very lighthearted images.

But maybe you feel the same way. Maybe you look in the mirror and wonder if you have what it takes to be something more.
Maybe, you turn up at work every Monday morning, and inside you wish there was a little more to your day than this desk, and the same old dull view out of the window. In your dreams after all, you're a model. You're someone special.

Do yourself a favour, stop dreaming. Stop hiding behind that mirror. Do something about it. No more hiding!

Are you an agent (a modelling agency)?

No. I'm a photographer. I'm the one who holds the camera and takes the pictures.

An agent is someone who apparently finds work for the models who they have "on their books". For doing this they take a cut of the modelling fee.

A better question to ask is "do you need an agent"? To which I'd have to answer "I don't believe so." There is lots and lots of glamour modelling work out there and it's all for the taking if you're pretty, professional, and punctual.

So, this being the case, why not start with us! Just send us your details and see if we'd be interested in working with you. And even if we're not we'll always tell you why and point you in the direction of people who are looking for a girl like you.

What sort of work do you specialise in?

We describe our work as "photos that most guys would like to take of their girlfriends".

So, whilst we take striking images, our images still feature "real" girls, in "real" settings. We're not keen on big empty studios or paper back drops or wind machines or anything that looks doesn't look natural. And that goes for the girls we work with too. We want our models to look alive, and fun, and flirty, and sizzling hot.. we're not into mean and moody, airbrushed and unobtainable. We leave "art" for the artists.

In other words, our images are EXACTLY what fill the pages of the top shelf magazines you'll find in most newsagents, and this is a very good thing because that's where the paid work is. And whilst we'd love to shoot for posh calendars, or page three, we're smart enough to realise there just isn't enough of a demand for that kind of photography.

There is however lots of magazine work. Lots and lots and lots. Contact us today if you'd like some of it.

Why aren't there any black/oriental/older girls on your site?

There are!

That said black & oriental girls, and ladies older than 25, rarely contact me.

This is a great shame. There's plenty of work out there and whilst it's true that a pretty 21 year old blonde with big boobs will always be popular, there's a growing demand for black girls, japanese girls, chinese girls, indian girls, and ladies in their 30s, 40s, and 50s.

Right now we're particularly interested in photographing indian or oriental ladies, and/or ladies in their thirties, forties or early fifties.
So please, if that's you.. contact me today.

Why not click here and see what other projects we're working on.

Can you make my dreams come true?

I'm amazed at how often I get asked this question!

We are always happy to offer advice, and I'll always point girls in the right direction as much as I can, but we aren't "agents" or "career officers"!

There are plenty of people out there who will be more than happy to "help you", and will promise you the world .. but trust me, they're not doing it for their health. There's a lot of money to be made out of girls who have a "dream".

My advice to you is to take your head out of the clouds and stop dreaming. Figure out what you want, then find out how to get there. You found this page, you're reading these words.. that's a very good start.

What's "prints for time"?

Prints for time is a way of paying a model without actually giving her any money! Instead the photographer provides the models with "prints".

This is a great for photographers. However, it's not so great for the models. Not unless you really need a set of photographs for a portfolio or something, or the corner shop is willing to accept photographs of you instead of cash.

Here at nomohi we don't mess around with "prints for time". We have real work available, and we're happy to pay models to do that work. We like to invite models along for a test shoot before we use you for paid shoot, but after that you can expect to be paid on the day in cash. So if you fancy earning £250+ for a fun days work contact us today.

What's a model release form?

A model release form is a legal document that most professional photographers will expect you to sign as part of a photoshoot.

The form legally makes the photographs the property of the photographer, and not you the model. This makes it possible for the photographer to sell the photos to a magazine, a website, or where ever.

Click here for an example of a model release form.

How do I build up a portfolio?

If you're thinking of entering the world of glamour modelling at some point you're going to need a portfolio. Put simply, a set of photographs that prove that you have what it takes to be a glamour model.

There are, of course, many many photographers and modelling agencies out there offering "portfolio" services. Some of them are expensive, others are quite simply extortionate. In nearly all cases you'll end up with some nice photos.. but will you be any further down the road to becoming a professional glamour model?

Many of the girls who come to us have at some point been seduced by glossy ads and competitions from companies who'll give you a complete "makeover" and a selection of soft-focus pictures of yourself caked in makeup and looking like a completely different person! This is not a portfolio. Do not waste your money on these people.

click here to get yourself a portfolioThe easiest way to create a portfolio is to collect your favorite images from photoshoots you do. Why not start with by doing a test shoot with us? You get a chance to try out modelling, and get some pictures for your portfolio, without paying out a fortune.

Click here to find out more about coming for a test shoot.

Alternatively..

Click here and check out our new nomohi glamour portfolio service. A complete portfolio, shed loads of advice, and your corner on the world wide web, for a fraction of the price you could pay elsewhere.

How can I make sure someone gets back to me / replies to my emails?

Isn't it frustrating when you e-mail someone but you never hear a peep out of them! I know, it drives us crazy. That's why here at nomohi we always reply to every single enquiry we get. However there are things you can do to dramatically increase your chances of getting a reply to any photographer you might contact. My top tips to get that photographer to call you back would be (in order of importance)..

  1. DON'T delete the previous part of the e-mail:
Although we're sure you have a memorable smile, sometimes it's easy to lose track of an email conversation if the previous part of the conversation has gone missing. So.. when you reply to an email, make it easy on the other person and leave the previous part of the conversation in the reply. Oh, and by the way, write your reply at the TOP of the e-mail, not the bottom!
(if your computer automatically deletes the previous part of the conversation and you're using Windows Live or Outlook (Express), try: tools, options, send, and tick the box "Include message in reply".)

  2. Be enthusiastic- give as much detail as possible:
Enthusiasm is very attractive. Tell the photographer all about yourself, what modelling experience you've had (if any), or ideas of what you'd like to do if you haven't. If you have a favorite outfit you think you look absolutely stunning in, throw that in the e-mail too.. and here's a tip, use real words. And a spell check. Be fun, but be professional.

  3. DO follow up your e-mail:
If you don't get a reply from your e-mail, follow it up. Obviously don't become a stalker or anything like that, but sometimes it's good to be keen. Best way is to try another form of communication, so if you've sent an e-mail and heard nothing, try phoning.

Can you put me in touch with an agent or modelling agency (in my area)?

Surprising though it may seem in all the years I've been doing I've never approached an agency when trying to find a model. Every other model I've ever worked with has come to me via this website, or by recommendation.

So, my advice to you - forget about finding an agent. You don't need one. Least not yet.

If you're not within our catchment area (London, Essex, Kent) but want to contact professional photographers and film makers who are looking for models and have paid work I recommend visiting www.nomorehiding.com

I'm a male model, can you use me?

I'm afraid not - we only photograph women here at nomohi. The main reason for this is mainly because there's a greater demand for female photography, plain and simple, but we'd be lying if we didn't admit that we just prefer photographing women!

And no, being a transvestite isn't close enough! Sorry chaps.
(Yes, people really do ask us that!)

However, if you're a male model we may be able to help you get work by promoting you on our no more hiding.com sister site. Take a look at the site and follow the links to contact us if you're interested.
